The General

on millpond

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We acknowledge that The General sits on the traditional territory of the Ojibwa/Chippewa people covered by the Williams Treaty, on the land of the Mississauga Alderville First Nations — an Anishinaabe speaking people located in Southern Ontario.

Our beloved four-legged Finn, THE GENERAL, presides over our shop.
Finneymae lived the motto: “You only have the fun you make yourself”

The General on millpond, aka THE GEN, is a store with fun, retro vibes, inspired by the old general stores that once dotted Trent Hills. Whether you’re local, visiting the village, or just passing thru, you’ll want to stop in at THE GEN!

Walk thru the doors of THE GEN and be greeted by friendly staff, the scent of local maple syrup, the warmth of a cozy stove in winter and refreshing breezes from the millpond in summer. Feast your eyes on modern merchandise atop antique tables, side walls full of shelves, drawers, and bins, all jam-packed with cool stuff. And what’s a store without music? Our background tunes have customers dancing in the aisles more times than we can count!

We are an inclusive, queer-owned and women-owned business dedicated to bringing joy to all who walk through our doors! At THE GEN, everyone can find something special — whimsical decor, artful gifts, unique greeting cards, 2SLGBTQ+ books & merch, fun stuff for kids, iconic Trent Hills gear and so much more! C’mon in and say hello!

OUR MOTTO

You Only Have The Fun You Make Yourself

Meet the Gen Gals!

Trish grew up in Nottingham, England hanging out with her grandfather in his Sweet Shop — where locals came to chat, kids bought ‘penny sweets’, and miners picked up their daily paper and chewing tobacco.

As a social worker and psychotherapist, Trish’s professional life has always been about community. As a proud member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, The General is, for Trish, a perfect expression of her passion for creating a place of diversity, inclusion and heart.

JO profile image

Jo was born to Danish immigrant parents and raised on a farm in Central Alberta. At an early age, Jo left the farm to forge a career as an award-winning Film and Television Costume Designer. ‘The Farm’ has always remained in her heart, and a move to a century farm in the Warkworth area a few years back brought her life full circle.

Inspired by the general stores of days gone by (and a few film sets!), The General is the perfect combination of creativity and community, and, for Jo, the perfect blend for rural life.
